Housing Initiatives

Our Focus: Turpin Hill

As part of Augusta’s GICH initiative, Turpin Hill has been selected as the pilot neighborhood for a focused revitalization effort. The neighborhood was identified because of significant housing conditions, blighted properties, and infrastructure needs.

Working alongside residents and community partners, the Augusta GICH Community Housing Team is developing a revitalization strategy designed to address housing conditions, strengthen neighborhood assets, encourage investment, and improve quality of life.

Most importantly, this work will be shaped by the people who call Turpin Hill home. Community input is essential to understanding neighborhood priorities, identifying opportunities, and creating solutions that reflect the needs and vision of residents.

From Planning to Action

The GICH process is about more than developing a plan. It is about building the partnerships, knowledge, and resources needed to put that plan into action.

Through GICH, Augusta is working to:

  • Identify local housing and neighborhood needs and opportunities
  • Engage residents in shaping neighborhood priorities
  • Develop strategies to improve housing quality and stability
  • Address vacant, abandoned, and blighted properties
  • Identify opportunities for new housing and housing rehabilitation
  • Strengthen neighborhood infrastructure and community assets
  • Connect local priorities with public, private, and nonprofit resources
  • Build partnerships that support long-term neighborhood investment
  • Develop a model for revitalization that can inform similar efforts throughout Augusta

GICH communities across Georgia have used the program to pursue initiatives ranging from housing rehabilitation and affordable housing development to infrastructure improvements, code enforcement, neighborhood cleanups, land banking, and partnerships with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity..
